The promised land was in the west; and this motivated saints and sinners alike to abandon everything and to trek the troubled miles. But the return to Eden, rather than a pilgrimage to peace, became a siege war against the angel-guarded garden gate; the attack of the congregations was repelled time and time again by the celestial host through hardship, disease, war, natural disasters, and cultural conflict. In the end, the pioneers were resigned to settle the inhospitable lands, hoping thereby, with their show of faith and dedication, to merit post-mortem entrance through the gates of pearl.
